Of Value and “Gifts”

As all people do, I had a friend in a spot of trouble once, needed money. Readily, I lent him cash, a fair chunk. He nearly got on hands and knees from gratitude, assured me the money would be back in my pocket soon.

Weeks became months became years.

Soon enough, the debt faded from mind, what was money between friends?

As all people do, that same friend lost some relatives. I gave him a ring, spoke my condolences. “Hey man,” he said all suave, oozing confidence, “at least I came into some inheritance. About that debt, I figured the money I owe you would make a good birthday gift.”

I laughed out loud, hurt my ribs a bit; then I did myself a favor and hung up.
